THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Office 1 issued a public warning that the shellfish gathered from Sual coast have tested positive of  red tide paralytic toxin.

BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden said shellfishes from barangays Baybay Norte and Cabalitian in Sual town issued a public advisory not to eat, gather, harvest, transport shellfish and ‘alamang’ from the coast of the two barangays in Sual.

All local government units have been advised to monitor all shellfish transported from Sual  and to require the presentation of an auxiliary invoice by vendors and transporters to make sure the cargo was not from the two barangays.

He clarified, however, that fish, shrimp, crabs and squid collected from Sual safe to consume provided they are fresh, clean and cooked well before eating them.

After the advisory was issued, four sacks of red tide-contaminated mussels were seized inside the market in Labrador town.

Labrador’s municipal fishery coordinator and Police confiscated the sacks before these could be sold.

The owner could not present any auxiliary invoice but Norma Clemente, a vendor from Brgy. Baquien Sual later admitted that the shellfish were gathered from the coast of Sual.  (Nora Dominguez/Helen Martin/PIA)
